The historical trajectory of urban planning in India spans from the planned settlements of the ancient Indus Valley civilization to contemporary challenges arising from industrialization and urbanization. The concentration of economic activities around urban centres fuelled migration to cities, leading to issues of congestion and strains on infrastructure. This emphasized the need for organized urban planning to navigate the complexities of urban life and promote planned, inclusive, and sustainable development amidst rapid urbanization.

Urban planning is the strategic process of designing, organizing, and managing urban environments to create planned, inclusive, and sustainable urban habitats. It involves balancing various factors such as land use, transportation, infrastructure, and environmental concerns to promote equitable development and enhance the quality of life for residents.

The Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act, 1976, established a three-tier development process, empowering Development Authorities to oversee urban and peri-urban growth. Utilizing planning tools like Comprehensive Development Plans, Town Planning Schemes, and Local Area Plans, the Act addresses to cater infrastructure demands for growing population, ensuring systematic and sustainable development. Adherence to the Act facilitated coordinated growth, mitigated urban sprawl, and fostered resident well-being and efficient urban systems.
